The 'Town of Victory' commemorates not a military but triumph in an argument where the town should be sited. This was in 1841, six years after Voortrekker leader Andries Potgieter acquired the rights to the land between the Vet and Vaal Rivers which he bought from the Bataung tribe for 42 head of cattle. It is the second oldest town in Free State.
